I was proud to serve with B Co 9th Eng from
Sept 67 to Dec of 69. I lost some good friends
on that day and still think of them today. I often
wonder why I came home and they didn't

Great site. All Americans should be proud of all
of you that served our country and created the
opportunities that we all live by today.
I am the nephew (and name sake) of LCPL
Daniel A Nelson. My uncle was killed during the
battle of Hue. We would like to know exactly
what happened to him while he was serving. He
was with the Charlie Co. 1/1 Marines. We do
know he was wounded in action and eventually
died on 2/19/68 at the Naval Hospital.

This is a beautiful and most impressive tribute
to the gallant marines who fought in this war.
They have never been recognized as the heroes
they were. We can never repay them but we
can remember them.

My deceased husband, Larry D. Clark, "E"
Co,2nd Bn 5th Marines, was a survivor of this
ambush.
What an amazing tribute to the young men who
made the ultimate sacrifice that day.
Recognizing the survivors for their heroism will
hopefully let them know we will never forget
them. Maybe it can heal some of the wounds
of the war.

Butch Plunkett is an old friend of mine, and I've
never held his background as a Marine grunt
against him. I was an Army helicopter pilot for
twenty-something years, including a stint in
Vietnam. Butch said that he had an appreciation
for Army helicopter pilots, as they were too
stupid to know where they shouldn't fly, like
into firefights to rescue troops on the ground. I
wasn't one of those, but I know what he meant,
and I know some who didn't make it back from
those missions. I think this web site and its
mission are a necessary thing, and I hope the
effort to recognize an Army officer among all
those jarhead heros proves to be successful.

Most informative Website....Carried my mind
back to my own Army Infantry Rifle Company
experiences in Korean War. Thanks so much
for spreading the word of the extreme sacrifices
of our young men fighting for our freedom.

I am honored to register on this website. I now
know the real story that led to the death of my
hero, and first cousin Jerry Collier and the many
other brave men who died so I could be free.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God
Bless Chuck and Ned for writing the Road to
the Graveyard and bring closure to me heavy
heart.

I was part of this convoy on 7 Feb 1968, and
have been looking for information and other
marines that were part of this convoy for the
last 41 years. I happen to stumble on your
story THE ROAD TO THE GRAVEYARD on
the Vietnam Tankers Association web site two
days ago and I couldn’t believe I have finally
found some information and contacts. After
reading the story, I found Ned Clarks phone
number on the SABASEARCH and called him
up and he gave me your web site and your
phone number.
Like I said over the phone I was an
A/Driver/Mechanic riding shotgun in one of two
Tractor Trailers from 11th Motor Transport Bn
out of Danang. The driver of my truck was
PFC Decker and the driver of the 2nd Tractor
Trailer was L/Cpl Huss . We were the only
three from 11th Motors in that convoy.
I believe the only reason I’am here today is that
I was in the rear of the convoy , approximately
the 7th vehicle from the rear and was very
lucky that day. Myself and Decker were
wounded in the first ambush, a round came thru
the upper portion of the drivers door blasting us
with shrapnel and the bullet hitting me in the
side glancing off one of the two bandoleers of
M-16 magazines I was wearing. I have been
looking for Decker and Huss for many years
with no luck. I would like to talk to the other
members of the convoy and tell my little portion
of what happened on that dreadful day. I
rotated out of Vietnam on 15 March 1968 and
spent the rest of my enlistment at MT
Maintenance Co Camp Lejeune and EAS on 1
Apr 69. After my experience on that convoy I
said to myself if I ever reenlist I would go into a
unit with a lot of fire power and protection and
in Nov 1972 I did reenlist and became a Tanker
and spent the next 19 years in a tank unit. I
retired from the Marine corps in Dec 1991 as a
Master Sergeant with 22 years of active duty.

I am Ned Clark's wife. I want to thank all the
people who contributed to this website and
story. It is great to see The Road to the
Graveyard published in the November 2009
issue of The Marine Corps Gazette where
others can read about it. It is an excellent tribute
to those who fought in the war. So proud of all
of you.

Served with Hotel 2/5 and was a member of the
reaction force for the convoy.
Doc Morin, Ron Mangilit were also present on
that night.
Revisited the site of the battle in 1994.

* Webmaster's note: The splendid efforts of the
2/5 reaction force broke the back of the NVA
formation at the Graveyard and saved the lives
of many Marines that night. Semper Fi
